It was dark. Which was fine. He’d been plenty of places in the dark before. And surely this was no different. He’d taken Daisy out to dinner, because that was the sort of thing a man did for the girl he was – dating almost, sort of. But as they’d wandered out of the Three Broomsticks he’d remembered that he had a gift for her at the studio which was fortuitously just a few storefronts down.

Hogsmede was still a bit creepy. It was still so empty. The things that had re-opened were doing good business, but the empty storefronts in between reminded him of the sort of destruction and terror that had come in the past year to this sleepy village that he used to love so much. He still loved it, just in a very different way.

Perhaps it was just the unsettling news recently that made him shudder as he walked down the cobble stone path, his arm slung lazily about Daisy’s shoulders as they walked. Perhaps it was the empty and dark windows reflecting something back at him as he past that caught the corner of his eye. But he didn’t feel comfortable, even walking the short distance across the village to the office and he was trying to find a decent way to say never mind when he heard the footsteps. Those were harder to imagine.

His arm around Daisy tensed as he slowed ever so slightly in his pace, wondering if maybe it had just been an echo?

Daisy was feeling comfortably full after dinner with Tilden. There were often days when she didn’t get to eat nearly as much, the options limited in a country that relied heavily on meat and potatoes. Daisy didn’t mind the potatoes but since meat was a no go she often felt unsatisfied. She gave her tummy a little pat, wondering if it was sticking out from what she had eaten. She thought not but was amused by the thought nonetheless[1].

She wondered if she ought to suggest that the get something for dessert. A tub of ice cream would be nice if they took it home and had it with some of Tilden’s brownies. He’d made another bath the day previous and she did not want them to go stale. Stale brownies were not tasty.

“Did you hear something?” Daisy started at the sound. She didn’t usually give much credence to a place being creepy—intimate objects could not claim to have intent after all—but even she could admit that Hogsmeade was a bit unnerving lately. It was just so dark and cold. She could barely remember what it had looked like before, she had been away so long and come back to have it be burned to the ground.

It sounded like footsteps. She turned to look, a cry going up as a flare of spellwork bloomed in the darkness[2].

1. Daisy took great pains to take care of her body having observed on several occasions what could happen if she didn’t.
2. Poetry is not one of Daisy’s strong suits it has to be said.

“No.” He said quickly, thinking for a moment that if he just denied it, it would be necessarily untrue. But of course, that was largely inaccurate. “Yes.” He corrected, his voice quiet, afraid that if whatever or whoever it was heard them, it would only be cause to make them angrier, if it was anger they were after. “It sounded as if there were somebody else-“ He glanced over his shoulder and technically saw nothing but shadows where someone might be lurking. And at that moment, whatever or whoever it was decided to make itself known.

He ducked his arm slipping from her shoulders as he fumbled about to try and find his wand, which was never where it was meant to be. He didn’t think of what he might be doing once he found it, only that he knew he needed to, because Daisy was most likely in danger. Which was a silly thought really. If anybody was in any actual danger it was him, as he cowered and searched. She was a much stronger person than he was. She knew many more things. He could tell you anything you wanted to know about herbs or fungi, but when it came to practical magic he was a bit rubbish.

She was much more adept at that sort of thing and honestly, if anybody was doing to get them out of this it would be her. And still he wanted to protect her in whatever way he might be able, so finally finding his wand he stood back up to his full height, “Should we be running now?” He whispered harshly, wand held at the ready, waiting for whoever it was to strike again.

“We aren’t – we aren’t worth robbing.” He said, trying to sound bold as he spoke toward the shadowy figure he couldn’t make out. The one who’d attacked first. Honestly, if they were being robbed that would’ve have been their attackers first reaction, most likely, but he figured he might as well reinforce the idea before they took off running. Which he really wished they would do.

Daisy wasn’t a duellist really, she hadn’t even joined duelling club while she was at Hogwarts. But she was very good with her wand and had read enough books on the subject that she felt fairly confident[1] that her response would be respectable.

She pulled on Tilden’s shoulder, wanting him to duck down. He was so blasted tall that he was an enormous target. Worse he was a target who talked.

Daisy threw up a shield spell as another blast of magic zinged towards them. The impact made her fingers tingle and the resulting spray of sparks blinded her for a moment. In the air there was a faint smell of ozone. It was a smell she knew well, though usually not in this fashion.

“They don’t want to rob us,” she hissed at him, not sure if he was hysterical and that was all that was coming out. “But yes, running would be a very good idea.” Certainly there was part of her that wanted to find out who would attack them and demand answers but that seemed like a very stupid idea. If they were being attacked then she had little doubt that whoever was doing it must have some idea who they were[2]. She grabbed his wrist and pulled, urging him to get moving, to find shelter, to get something big and solid and safe in the way.

1. To be perfectly honest Daisy felt fairly confident about several things she ought not to be so confident about but that is neither here nor there.
2. Or didn’t care which was worse if you thought about it?

“You don’t know that.” He said back hastily, thinking about the fact that he wasn’t exactly super popular in all kinds of circles. But that was neither here not there. For now, they needn’t argue. They needed to run instead.

Smarter folks with less horrifying visions of dying in the street would’ve probably disapparated by now, but running was the most logical step to him and to her as well and he quickly turned on his heel to take off, before realizing that he was going much faster than she was as he ducked around the nearest corner, pulling her toward him as he did so to the point where he was pretty sure he’d lifted her off the ground completely. Carrying her wasn’t a completely terrible idea. She’d stumbled and he’d just picked her up entirely instead of waiting for her to take the time to right herself. She could be angry with him about it later.

They were awfully close to the studio at this point and he knew that once they got inside, they would be fine. He didn’t hear anybody following them, but that didn’t mean they weren’t there. With Daisy slung over his shoulder, fireman style, she technically had a decent view and if she could keep herself from bobbing up and down too much as he ran down this alley toward the back entrance of the studio, she might even be able to get a few shots off.

This was his logic, he was unsure whether or not she would be so sympathetic to the idea.

Daisy did not have time to point out that they didn’t have money, nor did they look like they had any money. Not that she was a fan of such snap judgements about appearance but the truth of the matter was that some things could be observed and what people observed when they looked at them was that they had made their own knitted caps. They were delightfully cozy and utter anathema to anyone who had real money to throw around.

Then he was finally running and instead of leading the way his longer legs carried him forward and forward again, so much so that she lost her footing, until she didn’t have footing at all. She was swung up and over and was disoriented for a moment as she was settled like a sack of potatoes over his shoulders. It was not a comfortable position to be in and she felt the familiar sensation of panic that often flared up when she wasn’t moving under her own power[1].

Instead she lifted her head and tried to see if anyone was following them. She thought she saw a movement in the shadows and lifted her arm and cast a spell, but the position made it impossible to aim and the spell went wide. In so doing she illuminated the figure and saw them lift their wand to attack.

“Tilden get down!”

1. Thankfully the knowledge that panicking would not help them won out.

He didn’t want to do this anymore. He ducked when she said to, but rather than down as she’d implied he’d pushed through the door just to his right. The one he’d been hoping might be unlocked. The carelessness of his fellow radio hosts was not lost on him. He was actually rather thankful that they didn’t do things like lock the door before hurrying upstairs.

Tilden heard the spell hit the bricks just next to his ear before he reached and pulled the door closed behind him, taking care not to hit Daisy against the wall as he set her back on her feet and reached around her to lock the door and pull the shade over the small window that had WWN painted on it. Surely they’d know that they’d come in here, but it was a lot harder to hit someone through a closed door than out in the open. He heard the voices getting closer to the door as well and was sure if they wanted so desperately to get to them that they’d just take the thing off its hinges entirely. The thing was, he couldn’t imagine what in the world they’d be targeted for. So perhaps it was just some sort of very violent game.

Still, he raised his wand in anticipation, one arm wrapped around Daisy protectively as the voices grew closer. They should aparate. Or he should’ve cast wards. Or he should be better at putting something more than just a door between them and Daisy, but he wasn’t thinking clearly at the moment, only panicked and a little unsure.

They were inside. They were inside. It was a fact that registered right along side the fact that the spell had almost hit Tilden had hit the bricks on the side of the building and she could have sworn she felt the impact. Whoever was chasing them was not messing about[1].

Then she was on her feet again though the movement was so sudden she nearly went toppling over. She managed to keep her feet, grabbing onto Tilden’s arm, her fingers digging into flesh in her panic. She pulled herself closer but of course he was so much taller than her, rather like a giant in comparison.

“What if there are more of them? We should get out of here. Apparate. There aren’t any wards here are there?” She had never considered it, having only visited the station on once before at Tilden’s invitation. One could not see wards after all, though that would have been dreadfully inconvenient. “Come, we’ll side by side.”

She took his hand, ready to whisk him away. “Is there anyone else here?” She cast her gaze back into the building. They couldn’t just leave them . . .

1. As a general rule Daisy didn’t see the point of messing about but she would have liked if their attackers might have had the opposite view.

He thought it was cute that she was concerned about whoever else might’ve been in the studio, but getting through the door upstairs was nearly impossible. It had wards of all sorts, plus they’d probably hear the crack and realize they’d missed their intended targets. For whatever reason they’d been targeted. So whoever was on the air at the moment would be perfectly safe. And he would’ve explained all of this to her, had someone not been jiggling the handle of the door he’d hastily locked.

He realized they didn’t have time to chat. They never really had the time to chat before now either, they just both liked to talk.

“Home.” He said, making sure she knew where they were headed as he squeezed her hand and spun, landing – rather disappointingly in the flowerbed just outside the back door of the house. But if the poppies were all that suffered that evening after their wild run, he was plenty okay with having some dirty shoes and a need to re-plant the bed.

“I’m – really out of shape.” He said as she stepped back from her so that he might look down and make sure she was all there in one piece, stepping on another plant in the process. Because that’s about all he could think about right now. It was probably the shock of it all or something, he wasn’t able to catch his breath and he attributed this not to fear or adrenaline, but the need to expercise more so that when he ran off from shadowy and angry men, he did so comfortably. Yoga wouldn’t cut it.

Home. Just the word was like a beacon in the midst of her fright. Home was the obvious choice. They would be safe there and there would be no more people trying to kill them[1]. She was grateful for Tilden’s firm action on this, as it seemed like only seconds after he said the words ‘home’ that they were standing in the flowerbed, the fragrant scent of crushed flowers filling the air around them.

“No, that was perfect,” she heartily objected to his estimation that he was anything but a hero in this moment. She grabbed him before he could get too far away, and though her breath was as short as his she yanked on the collar of his shirt so she could demonstrate some of her gratitude for his quick action. He had saved her, he was a hero.

Thoughts about why anyone would target them could wait for later[2], right now she wanted nothing more than to be close to Tilden, to assure herself that he was whole and unbroken. It did not matter which tools she used to establish this she would not be denied. He tasted like life and love and all the good things that the world could offer.

It was still cold out. She shivered, the fear was not completely gone, not yet.

“Inside, inside,” she urged, pushing him towards the door.

1. Even Daisy could skip right over important facts but ought to be forgiven in her fright.
3. And they would most certainly. Daisy had a tendency to over analyze and it would not escape her notice that they had likely been targeting one or both of them specifically.

The kiss caught him off guard, but he was thankful for it, able to confirm again that she was there and solid. Nothing had happened, nothing was wrong. They were both fine. They had both gotten through whatever that had been. And things were going to be – fine. She seemed to think that that warranted a kiss and he wouldn’t ever complain about that.

He obeyed as ordered. It was always amusing to him when she pushed him around, mostly because she was so much smaller than he. Still, he hardly was ever resistant to what it was she wanted him to do. And if she wanted him inside, he would gladly comply, stopping only to kick his shoes off at the back door, so he didn’t track any mud inside.

He wondered briefly if he was allowed to kiss her again, since she started it, but instead he waited for her by the door, ready to usher her inside after she slipped out of her shoes as well. He’d make her tea or draw her a bath or something, because she still seemed a bit shaken. Anything to assure her that things were going to be okay.

She would worry. He didn’t want that. “Do you need anything?” Anything at all really. At this point he’d do what he could to get her whatever she needed.

Daisy tried to kick off her shoes, not as elegantly as she might have liked. They were boots and they did not kick off easily and instead she was left hopping around the foyer until she finally sat down and pushed them off with her hands. There was a fine tremble in her fingers as she looked at them, smeared with faint traces of mud from her boots.

That was so much worse than the other times she had been chased. Back in school when she would annoy someone or another and they would track her down and terrorize her[1]. Or when she’d been living on her own and some fellow couldn’t take no for an answer and would follow her, sure that she was easy prey. She’d had magic then, she could escape. But tonight was different. Magic almost hadn’t been enough. They could have died.

She looked up at Tilden and her face was damp in more ways than one. She shook her head and instead reached up towards him, holding her hands up, demanding almost to be picked up, to be coddled, to be held.

“Just you.”

1. There had been an incident in which she'd been thrown into the Black Lake which would not have been so very bad but for her rather unfortunate fear of drowning[2].
2. Nearly drowning as a four year old did strange things to the psyche.

This time when he picked her up it was better. She asked for it and he wasn’t slinging her over his shoulder like he had last time. And – well – nobody was following them and trying to kill them. That was a bit of a positive as well.

Instead, he wrapped his arms around her and hoisted her up into him, his lips finding hers now with ease, since he’d eliminated the height difference. He didn’t ask or hesitate. He was usually cautious when it came to this sort of thing, never knowing what he was allowed to do and what he needed to avoid. He’d been stepping around Daisy Hookum gingerly for nearly a decade, trying to keep from hurting her or offending her in any way, trying to make sure he didn’t run her off at all. And now it seemed they’d finally gotten to a point where he wasn’t going to do any of that by acting on his general whims, because it seemed they aligned fairly substantially with her own.

He thought for a brief moment that he ought to ask some other qualifying questions before doing anything else, but then realized that she was a very capable and smart woman who would’ve qualified her request with limitations on what having him at the moment entailed. So he didn’t wait much longer than the few moments it took for him to situate her in his arms to walk toward the hallway leading to her room, the thought of tea long forgotten as he had one destination in mind.

He only paused for a moment, pressing her against her bedroom door, his weight leaning against her just slightly as he fumbled for the knob. He would’ve taken them to his room, but somehow he imagined that hers would be much, much cleaner. And her bed was probably made. She seemed like the sort of person who made their bed in the morning. Not that it actually mattered at the moment.

When he picked her up she wrapped her legs around his hips. It seemed an entirely natural way to go about things and kept her legs from dangling in that horrible awkward way. If her skirt bunched up she ignored it, too intent on keeping them pressed close together. He was warm and solid and she liked that about him, that he was there, not some distant set of words on paper. She hadn’t thought very much about how much better that was than settling down to write him when some awful thing happened. It was nice to skip all the steps inbetween.

Her back was against not a wall but a door. It felt slightly different than a wall, there was more give. She could feel his hand fumbling for the knob and she shifted slightly as if she might help with this endeavour though her arms were still securely wrapped around the back of his neck.

“Turn it to the right,” She muttered agains this skin and felt the door swing open behind her. The room beyond was not quite neat but not quite messy either. There were too many books and they came in piles, stacked on the bedside table and on the floor beside that. There was even one on the bed, as if just waiting there for her to come back and read it. But the pillows were fluffed and the quilt was mostly straight. In fact there were too many pillows, suggesting a sort of cosy nest.

Perfect, really.

Her bed was indeed made. Though he had to be careful in his approach, since her room was crowded with books and things. The bedding looked nice though. He was glad that he’d picked those colors when setting up her room. And that was quite an amusing thing to be thinking of at a time like this. He recognized that staring at the bed wasn’t nearly as effective before he disentangled her limbs from his own and had deposited her securely amidst the many pillows she had around the bed.

It wasn’t even the first time he’d carried her to sleep. It wasn’t the first time he’d seen her bed. It wasn’t the first time they’d gotten a little carried away. But this felt very different.

He was going to say something stupid though. He could feel it coming. And she was too far away at the moment to just – kiss her and keep himself quiet which was actually an excellent strategy. But he noticed he’d laid her down on a book, which was never a great idea and went about fetching it, reading the cover with a grin. “Looks good.” He said, seeing a hardly clothed man, clutching at the body of a hardly clothed woman. The title implied that only very inappropriate things were happening therein, trying not to think about why one might want to read it alone in bed at night.
