Happy Holidays!
Full Moon: Sunday 21

Our limited edition beans this month are Mistletoe and Spearmint. Will you get both of these festive holiday flavors before they're gone?

Following a cold and snowy November, the last month of the year is upon us. The Christmas holidays are approaching, and with Hogsmeade remaining closed, people are scrambling to find the perfect gifts for those important people in their lives in other places. Diagon Alley remains croweded at any time that the shops are open, and a Goblin Market has popped up in Wales for the season. It's a perfect opportunity to take care of that shopping before it's too late. It's a perfect time of year to begin to put the past behind us and look forward to the future. Some may be apprehensive, but everyone has the same question: what will the new year bring?

“Natalie.” She called in a sing-song voice as she entered. It was quiet in the shop, hardly anybody was out in this weather, but if the shop was open, she knew Natalie was probably lurking somewhere in its innards making potions and the like, trying to keep herself busy so she didn’t have to worry about the snow-pocalypse occurring outside.

Pippa jumped when she heard a snowball slam against the door she’d just entered with a loud thud. Honestly, children these days were just an absolute mess. “I’m looking for something that can-“ She held her hand up to her mouth as she sneezed, “Help me with that.” Her sneezing wasn’t the simple, light, dainty sort of sneeze that you might expect from a woman of her stature. Oh no, she sneezed like she meant business. And apparently right now, she did indeed mean business.

“Honestly, working on a cure for dragonpox but can’t clear up a case of the common-“ She sneezed again. “Cold.” She’d tried to get some Pepper Up in her system but that had served only to exasperate the issue of sneezing. She was sure her nose was bright red at this point and she wasn’t due into work for another few days, so she couldn’t check herself in. That and there was something about having a run-of-the-mill cold that didn’t seem to her to be worthy of hanging out in her old haunt, magical bugs.

There was a simple solution to her problem she was sure. Some magical herbal tea that someone’s grandma used to always dream up for them, or some sort of medicine from a far, off muggle pharmacy that she just hadn’t experienced yet. She just needed all the help she can get and Natalie seemed to think she might have something that would do the trick. “Help me.” she pouted, leaning an elbow against the counter as she waited, hankie in hand for the younger witch to come to her aid.

Natalie was in the back of the shop, a potion in the cauldron in front of her that was letting off a pale green smoke that faintly smelled of licorice. It was a strange combination, one that she hadn't intended to end up with when she had been experimenting, but here she was, none the less. She would have to figure out exactly what was causing the spell before she put too much more work into it. Who knew if it would do what it was supposed to when it was applied to an injury or if it would cause more problems on its own? It wasn't the time to dive into that though. She would let it simmer for a short while and see if the scent went away on its own.

She heard the voice calling to her from the front of the shop, and she paused to listen to get a better idea of who it was that had showed up in the middle of the blizzard. Someone a bit mad, it seemed, since Natalie didn't think anyone else was out during this mess of the weather. The shop was open, technically, and there was a poor young witch that was simultaneously restocking the shelves and manning the front of the counter. Except it seemed she wasn't doing her job, since Natalie didn't hear a reply to Pippa's words. "Hold on. I'll be right there." She quickly turned the heat down under the cauldron, waiting for a moment to make sure that it was stable before she wiped her hands on her apron and moved toward the front of the shop.

"That's one hell of a sneeze you've got there," she said as she rounded the corner. Pippa certainly didn't look great; that was the first thing that she'd noticed. "You look like you haven't slept in days." It wasn't an insult, just an observation; Natalie was usually good for those. "Alright first... not that I'm questioning your healing prowess, but are you sure that it's the common cold and not anything worse?" Natalie wasn't trained as a healer, but she knew enough from volunteering at the hospital to know that certain potions wouldn't help if it was something more serious. "What exactly are you looking for? Something to help the symptoms? Something to help you sleep?"

“Over-treating something that I diagnosed wrong is more likely to kill me than you are.” She said, offering a small shrug and a sniffle before she pouted again. “It’s not anything complicated, but sometimes it’s the simple stuff that really gets you, ya know?” Because she could treat it like it was something big and scary and needed a lot of attention, but when it came down to it that simply wasn’t the case. This was just a case of the sniffles. And she needed to not overthink it, which was all she’d been doing recently.

“Do you have a grandma, Natalie?” That was a weird question because technically everybody had grandmothers, but that wasn’t really what she was getting at. She was just trying to get at the whole – simple remedy sort of thing, so she pressed on, clarifiying – “Apparently there are things that grandma’s make you do that make you better. Mine never talked to me while I was sick, but like – drink a spoonful of cognac and spin around three times or something – that seems like the sort of thing I ought to be doing for this.” She held a hand up for a moment as she sneezed again, trying her best to keep it to a minimum as she raised the hankie to her face.

“Or you know, anything that’ll make the sneezing go away. I can sleep just fine I just – This is treally disrupting my life.” She waved the hankie, a small white flag of surrender, really, as she shook her head. “I’m sorry if you don’t have anything, I just figured you would know. Doing what you do and all.” She saw potions and ingredients for everything, whereas Pippa’s healing prowess as she’d called it was very – limited in scope.

"Yes, well, I suppose you're right. And I'd rather you not die, given the choice. Selfishly, I suppose." Natalie felt for Pippa; she really did. Being sick was never fun, and Natalie knew it was only a matter of time before she was in the same situation that the other woman was. Like clockwork every December, she came down with something, magical or muggle, that would keep her out of work for a few days. "You should maybe consider a few days off work. Some time at home. Warm soup." Natalie would be more than happy to drop by after work with some warm comfort food and whatever remedies that she could get her hands on.

Natalie stared for a second, then she laughed. "Of course I have a grandmother. Don't you?" She had been close with her grandmother before she had passed away. Natalie missed her more than she could say. She had been ten when her grandmother had passed, and it was less than a year before her life was turned upside down with the news that she had been admitted to Hogwarts. She had a feeling her grandmother would have taken it all in stride and given her parents some things to think about. Maybe things would have turned out differently if her grandmother had been alive when she was first going to Hogwarts.

"Bless you. You poor thing." Natalie tried to think for a moment, sorting through what potions and vials she had kept in the back. Nothing that would do what Pippa wanted without causing other symptoms that might be less pleasant than sneezing. "Oh, hold on a moment. Wait right there." Natalie held up her hand, willing Pippa to stay where she was while she ran back to her office. She dug through the drawers in the desk. "Aha!" She grabbed one of the throat lozenges out of the drawer, circling back to the front of the shop. "Try this." She held it out to Pippa, waiting to see if it helped any with the tickle in her throat or the sneezing. It was one of the remedies that her grandmother had always given her as a child, and that had to stand for something.

“Because you would miss me far too much. Though to be fair, I would rather I not die as well.” That seemed an easy request of the world really. They already had one Podmore on the brink in this whole situation, why not leave the other alone? It seemed best that way really. Plus here was Natalie, claiming that she’d miss her when she was gone. She thought. Probably. That was probably what she was saying, wasn’t it? She wished Natalie would confirm the suspicion though, just in case.

“I mean I guess technically we’ve all got them, but mine was sort of rubbish. I mean, no offense to grandmother’s in general mine just- you know-“ She tapped her temple and then made a wavy hand motion to indicate that the woman was just sort of – out there. And that she wouldn’t be helping with matters like illness. Pippa was about to clarify when she sneezed again, which really just made the whole idea of talking about grandmothers seem silly at this point. So she decided to nix the idea and watch as Natalie wandered away.

“Wur elze wud I goh.” She said, her nose a bit stuffy as she fished in her bag for a hankie to clear out the nasal passages a bit. Not the most attractive thing ever, but Natalie wasn’t the sort of woman she figured she needed to impress. No offense to the younger witch of course.

“Oh. You’ve brought me candy.” She said, shoving the hankie back into a pocket and plopped it in her mouth before shaking her head and making a bit of a face. It wasn’t candy at all, but it seemed to be – helping a bit. She didn’t feel the overwhelming need to cough for instance, which was an impressive feat in and of itself. “Wad is dis witchcraf?” she said, this time her words impeded by the lozenge in her mouth than by physical inhibitors.

"You're right about that. I would certainly miss you. You'd miss me as well, you know." Unless Pippa came back as a ghost, which was something that Natalie didn't want to think about. However content some of the ghosts had seemed at Hogwarts, she couldn't shake the superstition that ghosts had unfinished business that wouldn't allow them to move on. She knew they existed, but it saddened her to think of the people that died and were stuck here, living some sort of half life for as long as they were around. "So you'd better go home and get your rest and all of that advice that the healers tend to give when it's that time of year when everyone gets sick." Ironic as it would be for someone in Pippa's career path to succumb to a magical bug or cold.

Natalie rolled her eyes a bit, though she waved her hand at Pippa's response about her grandmother. "Yes, well, I've known a few of those in my time as well. There's nothing wrong with that. Some of them are good at helping out with the mothering and the nurturing. Others have different interests, and that's completely fine." It kept life interesting, and Natalie always thought it was good fun to visit with some of her friends' relatives that were a little less traditional than her own grandparents had been. It certainly made for good stories, even if they weren't as helpful when someone scraped their knees or needed some medicines.

"Home to bed?" Natalie suggested with a laugh, though she didn't expect her friend to do anything of the sort. She had dragged herself here to the shop, and Natalie was going to do everything she could to help with this pesky sneezing problem before Pippa started to inflict real damage to her throat and lungs from the sneezing. She handed over the lozenge without much explanation, choosing to see how it worked first. "Mmm not candy though. It's a lozenge. Soothes your throat and all. My grandmother used to give them to me when I was sick. I always try to keep a couple around. Helps with coughing too." Maybe she was explaining entirely too much, but she was known to ramble at times. "But it's helping, yeah? I can grab some more for you if you want them."
